During my progression as an artist, my artwork has focused increasingly on man's relationship with the environment: both in narrative works, using allegory and symbolism to construct a humorous and ironic look at our impact on the land; and alternatively, responding more directly to the power, peace and beauty of the natural world, in which the human footprint is less intrusive. Each element feeds the other and brings balance and creativity to my art. Through observation of our surroundings, I hope to inspire a thought process that brings about an appreciation of our natural environment and questions our methods of maintaining it.
In this painting, the circus tents portray a cheap façade in which the characters are oblivious to encroaching smokestacks in the background. The clown eats the last flower while the jack-in-the-box forms a question mark, asking what will become of the madness. The central character is a wise old man, playing the same tune over and over, and waiting for our response. |
